Differences Between Algae and Mold

We’re Skilled at Removing Algae and Mold at Apex Mobile Pressure Washing

We’ve talked a lot about the differences between algae and mold over the past year. That’s because the technicians at Apex Mobile Pressure Washing are skilled at removing both from commercial and residential properties. If you haven’t read our August blog or February blog, we’d like to explain how the two substances differ. We’d also like to stress why it’s important to get rid of both.

Algae Needs Sunlight to Grow

Algae is a fungus that needs sunlight to grow, while mold doesn’t need sunlight at all. Spores that create roof algae, also known as gloeocapsa magma, are airborne. Generally, algae grows in humid areas with excess sunlight. The dark color that appears comes from the black residue that the algae leaves after it eats shingles’ limestone filling. Algae cells have chlorophyll, enabling them to photosynthesize (use sunlight) to convert carbon dioxide into the energy it needs. Although algae isn’t exactly like a plant, as it has no roots or stems, it still needs sunlight and water to grow.

Mold Can Cause Serious Health Problems

Mold grows in dark spaces and can cause health problems, some serious, while algae is more cosmetic than anything. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. E.P.A.) website notes, “Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins).” Exposure to mold can cause health problems in otherwise healthy people and significantly impair those with pre-existing health problems.

Both Algae and Mold Can Cause Structural Damage

Despite their differences, it’s important that you remove algae and mold as soon as possible to avoid either causing structural damage. Algae causes structural damage, weakening the roof’s integrity by eating away at the asphalt shingles’ limestone filler. This could cause shingles to detach. Mold causes structural damage by feeding on and destroying organic matter. It can rot and damage drywall, carpets, wallpaper, and more. Sometimes, mold causes even more severe structural damage; it can lead to ceilings collapsing, floors caving in, and walls falling down.
